Eight American actors have received a total of four Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor. They are (*denotes winner): Walter Brennan (1937*, 1939* and 1941*-42), Claude Rains (b. UK; 1940, 1944-45 and 1947), Arthur Kennedy (1950, 1956 and 1958-59), Jack Nicholson (1970, 1982, 1984* and 1993), Robert Duvall (1973, 1980, 1999 and 2015), Jeff Bridges (1972, 1975, 2001 and 2017), Al Pacino (1973, 1991, 1993 and 2020) and Mark Ruffalo (2011, 2015-16 and 2024). The Emmy-winning, EGOT-nominated Ruffalo added his name to the list with a nomination for his role as Duncan Wedderburn in the Georgios “Yorgos” Lanthimos-directed Poor Things (Ireland/UK/USA, 2023).
Ruffalo is best known for playing Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the four movies in the Avengers series: The Avengers (2012), Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).
