Alessia Cara (Canada, 2018), Dua Lipa (UK, 2019), Billie Eilish (USA, 2020), Megan Thee Stallion (USA, 2021), Olivia Rodrigo (USA, 2022), Samara Joy (USA, 2023), Victoria Monét (USA, 2024) and Chappell Roan (USA, 2025) are the eight most recent winners of Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards – a record-breaking streak for solo females in this category.
In 2025, Roan (alongside Sabrina Carpenter) was nominated in all four “General Field” categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist), and her Best New Artist award extended the run of solo female success in the category beyond the seven consecutive wins for LeAnn Rimes (1997), Paula Cole (1998), Lauryn Hill (1999), Christina Aguilera (2000), Shelby Lynne (2001), Alicia Keys (2002) and Norah Jones (2003).
First awarded in 1960 (to Bobby Darin), country/pop singer Bobbie Gentry was the first solo female recipient, in 1968.
