Rohan Bopanna (b. 4 March 1980) and his partner Matthew Ebden won the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open in Melbourne on 27 January 2024 when Bopanna was 43 years 329 days old. The No.2 seeds defeated the unseeded Italian pairing of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7–6, 7–5 on Rod Laver Arena as Bopanna collected his first-ever Grand Slam men’s doubles title at the 61st attempt, having made his debut in Australia in 2008.
The oldest winner of a Grand Slam tennis title overall is Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia, 18 October 1956), who was just shy of her 50th birthday (49 years 326 days) when she lifted the mixed doubles trophy – the last of her 59 Grand Slam titles – with Bob Bryan at the US Open on 9 September 2006.
Bopanna took the male record from Jean-Julien Rojer (Netherlands, b. 25 August 1981), who was 40 years 283 days old when he won the French Open men’s doubles with Marcelo Arévalo on 4 June 2022.
Mike Bryan (b. 29 April 1978), winner of the US Open men’s doubles with Jack Sock on 7 September 2018, and Leander Paes (b. 17 June 1973), who took the US Open men’s doubles with Radek Štěpánek on 8 September 2013, have also won major doubles titles after turning 40.
