The highest-grossing movie at the global box office released in 2023 was Barbie, having taken $1,439,854,017 (£1.14 billion), according to The Numbers on 10 January 2024.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made history in 2023, impacting both the film industry and wider society. Warner Bros. said "it contributed over £80,000,000" ($101,873,200) to the UK economy alone. Barbie also became the highest-grossing film by a female director at the global box office.

The next highest-grossing films of 2023 worldwide were The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1,363,250,724; £1.07 bn), and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer ($955,175,452; £755.5 mn). As Barbie and Oppenheimer launched around the same time, and with high expectations for both to perform well, the media coined the phrase "Barbenheimer" to denote the two big hitters going head to head at the cinema.
