The most “TIME Person of the Year” titles awarded to an individual male is three, achieved by Franklin D Roosevelt (USA) in 1932, 1934 and 1941.
Roosevelt was named “Person of the Year” in 1932 after his landslide victory in the US presidential election, defeating the incumbent Herbert Hoover (USA). He was the first US president to be given this award.
Two years later, TIME awarded Roosevelt the title again, in recognition of his New Deal policies, which aimed to restore America’s economy and provide jobs for those suffering from the Great Depression.
The president won “Person of the Year” for the third time in 1941. As Roosevelt was in power during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was responsible for declaring war against Japan and leading the USA through World War II.
The female record is two, set by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift (USA): in 2017 (as part of a group of women dubbed the "Silence Breakers") and in 2023 (exclusively awarded to her).
Each year, TIME's editors choose who will be awarded the iconic title. They pick the “individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world" in the preceding 12 months.
