The first red card in a Rugby World Cup final was issued to Sam Cane (New Zealand) by referee Wayne Barnes in the final of the 2023 tournament between New Zealand and South Africa on 28 October 2023, at the Stade de France in Paris, France.

All Blacks skipper Cane was dismissed for a high challenge on Jesse Kriel in the 27th minute. He was originally awarded a yellow card for the offence, but it was later upgraded to a red by the bunker review system.

South Africa went on to win the contest 12–11.
