Army ants in the genus Eciton, from Central and South America, and driver ants in the genus Dorylus, from Africa, have a reputation for travelling in highly organized columns.  These can be up to 100 m (328 ft) long and over 1 m (3 ft 4 in) wide and may contain as many as 600,000 individuals which frequently take several hours to pass one spot. The reputation these ants have for devouring any animal that is too slow to get out of the way is accurate.  They will eat everything from poisonous snakes to tethered horses!  Army and driver ants do not march all the time, but usually alternate 15 days of marching with 20 days of camping while the queen lays eggs. E. burchelli are usually 8–12mm long a swarm of them will travel around 100–200 m per day,
