The largest replica coin measures 9.1 m (30 ft) and is 0.61 m (2 ft) thick. Known as the Big Nickel, it replicates a 1951 Canadian five-cent coin and is located at the Dynamic Earth science facility in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The giant coin was unveiled to the public on 27 July 1964.
The idea of the giant coin came from Ted Szilva, a 28-year old Canadian fireman, who in 1963 suggested the construction of a giant coin to mark the centennial of Canada as a nation. By July 1964, the monument and a surrounding park had officially opened, thanks to the sponsorship and support of the INCO mining company, which was the largest employer in the city. This particular coin was chosen because it commemorated the bicentennial of the chemical isolation of nickel by Swedish chemist Baron Axel Frederic Cronstedt, and nickel having a large part to do with the growth and development of Sudbury.
