The largest wild member of the dog family is the widely distributed grey or timber wolf (Canis lupus), which has a head-body length of 1–1.6 m (3 ft 3 in–5 ft 3 in), a tail length of 31–51 cm (1 ft–1 ft 8 in), a shoulder height of 66–81 cm (2 ft 2 in–2 ft 8 in) and a weight of 16–80 kg (35–177 lb). Males are usually about 15–20% larger than females, but size varies according to range with the largest animals living in Canada, Alaska and Siberia and the smallest in the Middle East.

The largest widely accepted grey wolf on record is an individual from the Yukon, Canada, that reportedly weighed 103 kg (227 lb).
