The longest duration flight by a solar powered remote-controlled (RC) model aircraft is 8 hour 30 minutes and was achieved by Daniel Riley (USA) in Seattle, Washington, United States on 22 August 2020.
For this record title Daniel Created a delta wing aircraft due to the larger surface area on the wings deducing that the greater area would allow for more solar panels and thus could generate more electricity compared to a more conventional wing design and that this outweighed the downsides of changing to this design. The thought proved fruitful as the aircraft was able to remain airborne for 8 hours and 30 minutes and could have gone longer, but satisfied with the flight time and the concern that the onboard batteries were being continuously charged, Daniel landed the solar powered aircraft successfully and continues to experiment with the design.
