The Ghent Altarpiece – also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb or The Lamb of God, Dutch – is a large early-15th-century Flemish polyptych panel painting. It comprises 12 panels, eight of which are hinged shutters. These wings are painted on both sides, providing two different views depending on whether they are open or closed. The altarpiece was commissioned by Hubert van Eyck, who died in 1426, and the panels were completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck between 1430 and 1432. The altarpiece has been the victim of 13 crimes and seven thefts since it was first unveiled. The thefts include those by invading French and German forces. In 1934, two of the panels were stolen. Only one was recovered and police are still searching for the missing panel.
