Ski instructor Davo Karnicar (Slovenia) skied from the summit of Everest to Base Camp in five hours on 7 October 2000. The first person to achieve this feat, he did not remove his skis during the descent from 8,848 m. (29,029 ft) to 5,350 m. (17,550 ft).
By contrast, it took Karnicar a month to reach the summit as a result of the need to stop at several camps for some days in order to acclimatise to the extreme altitude.
