Team Europe (captained by Björn Borg) led Team World (captained by John McEnroe) by five tournament wins to two at the conclusion of the seventh edition of the Laver Cup in Berlin, Germany, on 20–22 September 2024. Team Europe won the first four editions (2017–19 and 2021) before Team World took the next two tournaments (2022–23). Most recently, in a closely fought match-up at Berlin’s Uber Arena, Team Europe – featuring the likes of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev – triumphed 13–11 to extend their series lead over Team World.
Trailing 7–11 heading into the last two singles rubbers (worth three points apiece for the winning team) on 22 September, wins for Zverev against Frances Tiafoe and Alcaraz against Taylor Fritz turned the tie in Team Europe’s favour, as Team World narrowly failed to make it three tournament wins on the bounce with their two highest-ranked players.
Named after Australian tennis legend Rod, the Laver Cup has been described as the “Ryder Cup of tennis”. It features 12 matches (nine singles, three doubles) over three days, with the points value for winning a match increasing each day. The first team to 13 points wins the tournament.
Fifty-one players from 23 different countries have participated in the seven editions of the Laver Cup to date, including one-time “big three” Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the current world No.2 (as of 21 October 2024), made his tournament debut in 2024, but world No.1 Jannik Sinner, from Italy, has yet to participate for Team Europe.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev has the most wins by an individual player, having represented Team Europe in all five of their tournament triumphs to date. He also holds records for the most singles matches won (7), the most singles points won (17) and the most total points won (21).
The 2025 Laver Cup is scheduled to take place in San Francisco, California, USA, on 19–21 September, which will be the first tournament for new team captains Yannick Noah (Team Europe) and Andre Agassi (Team World).
