According to the World Health Organisation and the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, 2005 was the worst year for natural disasters in modern times. Tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruption, a plague of locusts and a flu pandemic combined to create an estimated death toll of 97,490 between January and October of that year.
