Pick of the Pops (UK) was first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 4 October 1955, and has featured chart countdowns since 29 September 1957, when South African-born DJ Alan Dell took over from David Jacobs (UK) as presenter.
As of 19 November 2023, Pick of the Pops had been broadcast on the BBC – and for a number of years on Capital Radio – as a weekly music chart programme for 66 years 51 days, notwithstanding the fact that it was off air for periods in the 1970s-1990s (notably between 24 September 1972, when it finished its first stint on BBC Radio 1, and 13 March 1982, when it was revived on Capital Radio).
With programming breaks excluded, however, Sweden’s Svensktoppen (“The Swedish peak”), which debuted on 13 October 1962 as a feature on Svensklördag ("Swedish Saturday") before getting its own weekly slot, had been on air for 57 years 280 days (as of 19 November 2023). This means it has a slightly longer active existence than Pick of the Pops at 57 years 46 days (maximum).
Svensktoppen's entire existence (including its break between 13 June 1982 and 13 October 1985) came to 61 years 37 days, on 19 November 2023.
Svensktoppen, Sweden’s “largest and oldest chart programme”, has been hosted by Carolina Norén since 2007. On 14 April 2019, the show began ranking songs based on streaming, download and airplay data, instead of votes from the general public.
Steve Wright became the 10th presenter of Pick of the Pops on 21 October 2023.
The Grand Ole Opry, the longest-running weekly radio music programme, has been broadcast on WSM in Nashville, Tennessee, since 28 November 1925. It has featured many top-selling artists on the bill, but is not a chart-based show.
