Replying to Sri Lanka’s 257 for 9 in a Women’s Cricket World Cup match at the County Ground in Bristol, UK, on 29 June 2017, Australia (262 for 2) reached their target with 6.1 overs to spare thanks to skipper Meg Lanning’s 152 not out – the highest score by a woman in the second innings of a One-Day International (ODI). Lanning’s 11th hundred in ODI cricket (a female record she’d extended to 15 by 21 January 2023) featured 19 fours and a six from the 135 deliveries she faced.

Lanning took centre stage after Chamari Athapaththu’s “outstanding feat of individual brilliance” for Sri Lanka: 178 not out from 143 balls, including half a dozen sixes. It was the second-highest score by a player at the World Cup.

Lanning announced her international retirement in November 2023.
