The Palaeolithic site of Monte Verde in the Los Lagos region of Chile, one of the oldest archaeological sites in South America, has revealed the earliest-known use of edible mushrooms by humans, dating back over 14,000 years. Among various artefacts, the site has yielded evidence of a diverse diet, including mushrooms, berries, seaweed, fruits and over 40 medicinal plants.

These ancient inhabitants of South America not only consumed mushrooms that are still part of the local diet today but also had knowledge of more than 40 medicinal plants.
