The fastest trail half marathon carrying a 40 lb pack (male) is 2 hr 56 min 13 sec, and was achieved by Renaud Cmela (Ireland), in Otley, United Kingdom, on 3 August 2024.
Renaud completed his attempt on the Punk Panther's Six Dales Trail. Renaud enjoys running and trail running, so he decided at the age of 41, just as he was about to be a father for the first time, to set himself a challenge.
He wanted to push himself as well as inspire others, but in the lead-up to the attempt, he was unable to train fully due to a health condition that arose unexpectedly. After months of recovery in hospital, he was given the green light for moderate training. At this time, he chose to focus on what he could do rather than what he couldn't. When he was able to begin running again, he felt he was starting from scratch and experienced moments of doubt just days before the attempt. He faced many challenging moments during the race, both mentally and physically, but ultimately he came out on top, crossing the finish line and beating his original goal of completing the race in under three hours.
