Australia’s 412 for 3 against Denmark at the Middle Income Group Ground in Mumbai, India, on 16 December 1997 featured a 155-ball 229 not out from captain and opening batter Belinda Clark, which remains the highest individual score at the Women’s Cricket World Cup and, until New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr topped it with 232 not out against Ireland more than 20 years later on 13 June 2018, the highest score by a woman in a One-Day International (ODI). Karen Rolton (64) and Lisa Keightley (60) also weighed in with useful contributions as Denmark (49 all out) were squashed by 363 runs – the highest margin of victory by runs at either the women’s or men’s editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Australia scored 88 runs more than the 324 for 3 posted by England against Ireland in a World Cup match in Pune on the same day. England’s effort remained the second-highest team score at the Women’s Cricket World Cup until New Zealand racked up 373 for 7 against Pakistan in Sydney, Australia, on 19 March 2009.
England’s 377 for 7 against Pakistan at Grace Road in Leicester, UK, on 27 June 2017 is currently (as of the end of the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup) the second-highest tournament team score.
Only three men’s World Cup matches have produced a higher team score than Australia’s 412 for 3, led by South Africa’s 428 for 5 against Sri Lanka in Delhi, India, on 7 October 2023.
Australia’s women would go on to win the fourth of their unrivalled seven World Cup titles (1978–2022) in 1997, adding to their hat-trick of wins in 1978, 1982 and 1988. Further success came their way in 2005, 2013 and 2022.
