The person who is thought to have found the most supernovae as a solo effort is Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki, who has discovered 172 supernovae from his private observatory in Yamagata, Japan. However, the amateur team with the highest recorded number of supernovae is a collaboration led by Tim Puckett, whose private observatory in Georgia has discovered at least 380 supernovae thanks to a dedicated team of amateur astronomers who help analyse the data.
