The most people cooking Khorkhog simultaneously is 330 and was achieved by Mongolian Association of Master Chefs (Mongolia) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on 22 August 2026.
Khorkhog is Mongolia's ultimate campfire dish, except instead of flames, the heat comes from within. Chunks of mutton or goat meat are packed into a sealed metal container alongside potatoes, carrots and onions, then cooked using river stones heated to scorching temperatures. The stones are dropped directly into the container, creating intense steam and heat that slowly cook the ingredients. It's a dish born on the open steppe, where nomadic herders needed a reliable, communal way to cook with whatever nature provided.
The Mongolian Association of Master Chefs had been dreaming about this record attempt for three years, spending a full year in careful preparation before finally making it happen. "We want everyone in the world to know Khorkhog is a Mongolian food – it belongs to our nation," said Tergel Bat-Ulzii, who led the execution team. "We also want the young generation to stay with tradition and carry on our heritage."
"A message of cultural preservation sits at the heart of the attempt," reported GWR Adjudicator Maggie Luo, who oversaw the attempt. "Some of the world's most remarkable cooking techniques have been quietly perfected over centuries on horseback, under open skies. And while waiting for the stones to heat up, and during the cooking process, participants danced to beauitful Mongolian music. It was a treat for the senses!"
