The Valles Marineris on Mars is the largest canyon in the Solar System. It has an overall length of around 4,500 km 2,800 miles. At its widest it is 600 km 370 miles across and is also up to 7 km 4.3 miles deep. It is named after the Mariner 9 spacecraft that first discovered it in 1971.
