On 22 February 2020, Madonna (USA, b. Madonna Ciccone) topped Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart for a historic 50th time with “I Don’t Search I Find”. She was the first act to accumulate as many as 50 No.1 hits on a single Billboard chart since the magazine published its first countdown based purely on record sales – “National Best Selling Retail Records” – in the issue dated 27 July 1940.
Madonna has scored No.1 hits on (the currently suspended) Dance Club Songs in 28 separate calendar years since 1983, including nine (1987–95) and 10 (1997–2006) years consecutively at the height of her popularity. The “Material Girl”’s first No.1, “Holiday”/“Lucky Star” (1983), and 2000’s “Music” were her longest-running chart-toppers: both spent five weeks at the summit, on her way to a cumulative 82 weeks at No.1.
George Strait’s 44 No.1s on Hot Country Songs is the closest anyone else has come to racking up a half-century of chart-toppers on one Billboard chart. Rihanna had 33 No.1s on Dance Club Songs as of 28 March 2020, the date of the last chart before it was suspended “amid the widespread social distancing being practised in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic. The pause reflects the numerous postponements and cancellations of live music events, from individual artist tours to festivals and more, as well as the closures of clubs, against the backdrop of quarantining as public gatherings are limited and/or prohibited throughout the United States and worldwide.”
