The most stolen bases in a season is 130 by Rickey Henderson in 1982.

"The mark of 138 by Hugh Nicol in 1897 occurred during a time when stolen bases often were awarded for taking an extra base on a hit by another player. That is NOT a stolen base as we know it. The modern steal rule was put into place in 1898. Before then, any time a runner took an extra base (such as advancing to third base from first on a single) he was awarded a stolen base"
