The smallest eye in a tropical cyclone was 6.7 kilometres (4 miles) across, recorded in Tropical Cyclone Tracy while over Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, on 24 December 1974. This record is ratified by the World Meteorological Organization.

Its path over a highly populated area resulted in TC Tracy being the most devastating cyclone in Australian history: in Darwin, 80% of buildings were destroyed, 71 people were killed and 35,362 people (of the city's 47,000 total population) were forced to evacuate, with most citizens subsequently left homeless.

By contrast, the largest tropical cyclone eye was observed in Tropical Cyclone Kerry, which lasted from 13 February to 6 March 1979 in the Coral Sea in the South Pacific, with an eye measuring some 180 km (112 mi) across as measured on 21 February by reconnaissance aircraft.
