Of the approximate 1,600 species of cactus (family: Cactaceae), Mexico boasts the most native species, with in excess of 850 different types naturally growing within its borders. Of these, around 90% are endemic to this country.
Two particular genera that thrive in Mexico are Mammallaria (aka globe/pincushion/nipple cacti) with approximately 140 species and Opuntia (aka prickly pears) with more than 100 species growing in the wild there.
