Blankers-Koen won four of the nine women’s athletics events at the London Olympics: the 100 m, 200 m and the 80 m hurdles, and she also ran the anchor leg of the victorious Dutch 4 x 100 m relay team. She was also world-record holder in the high jump and long jump at the time. A 30-year-old mother of two, Blankers-Koen was dubbed the “Flying Housewife” for her exploits in London.
