Withstanding 100-km/h (60-mph) winds and temperatures as low as -35°C (-31°F), Blacha skied 1,381 km (858 mi) to the pole, pulling her 100-kg (330-lb) sledge. At the time, this represented the longest solo unsupported polar ski journey by a woman.
