The oldest known examples of Egyptian hieroglyphs were unearthed in 1999 in Abydos, 300 miles (483km) South of Cairo. The clay seal impressions and ivory tags have been dated to between 3400 and 3200 B.C. and were discovered by excavators from the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo.
The tokens were used for labelling containers with goods such as cereals, oils and textiles.
