The most consecutive sumo bouts is 1,653, achieved by Tamawashi Ichirō (Japan, b. Batjargal Munkh-Orgil, Mongolia) between 2004 and 2024.
Tamawashi surpassed Aobajo’s record of 1,630 consecutive sumo bouts on Day 3 (10 September) of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament. Tamawashi missed two bouts during the July 2022 tournament on account of COVID protocols, but the Japan Sumo Association ruled that his streak should be regarded as unbroken. His record stood at 832 wins and 821 defeats, having achieved a highest rank of Sekiwake (the third-highest tier of Japanese sumo).
