Portugal accounts for 34% of world area occupied by the cork-oak tree. It covers an area of 736,000 ha (1,818,695 acres).
Cork is environmentally friendly in terms of production, as it can be harvested from the bark of the tree, without killing it. Seven countries in all grow cork oak, and all are in the Mediterranean basin: Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.
