Poohsticks is a game invented by AA Milne of Winnie the Pooh fame - Christopher Robin and Pooh throw sticks in the water at one side of the bridge then run over to see which stick makes it to the other end first. The 2000 World Poohsticks Challenge was organised by teddy bear enthusiasts Frances Benton and Jo Rothery to raise money for chairity - the Cancer Research Campaign Scotland, Charlie Bear for Cancer Care, the Daisy Appeal. Donation forms, each listing the number of 50 Poohsticks, were distributed and those purchasing a stick paid a suggested price of £1. The Poohsticks were actually lolly sticks donated by Walls Ice Cream. Berwick Amateur Rowing Club provided a two-person boat to pull out the winning stick. Nine-year-old Thomas Harrington threw the sticks in the river at 10.30am. A stick stamped 8702 won.
