The most medals won by a woman in both Summer and Winter Olympics events is six and was achieved by Clara Hughes (Canada) who won two bronze medals in Cycling at the 1996 Summer Olympics before switching to Speed Skating where she won a bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics, a gold and silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics before winning another bronze medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Clara Hughes was born in Winnipeg in 1972 and her Olympic dream began in 1988 watching speed skaters on television. However after a brief career in the winter sport she turned to Cycling dominating the national scene winning the Canadian cycling championships 18 times. In 2000 she returned to speed skating and maanged to qualify for the 2002 Olympics. By winning bronze in the 5000 metre event she became just the fourth person in history to win medals at both the Summer and Winter games and only the second woman after Christa Luding. More recently Clara returned to Cycling and the Summer games as she participated in the 2012 London Olympics and just missed out on another medal, coming 5th in the Road Time Trial.
