Most Tony Awards won by an actress

Audra McDonald (USA) has won the most Tonys by a performer, securing six outright acting awards: Best Actress in a Musical for Carousel (1994, as Audra Ann McDonald), Best Featured Actress in a Play for Master Class(1996), Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Ragtime (1998), Best Featured Actress in a Play for A Raisin in the Sun (2004), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess (2012) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2014). McDonald is also the only person to win in four different acting categories. McDonald is the fifth performer to be nominated in four acting categories – Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (two), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play (two), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (one) and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play (one) – and the first to win in all four.
