The most expensive piece of grass turf was purchased by Ken Bates (UK), Chairman of Chelsea Football Club, on 17 May 2000 who spent £20,000 ($29,884) to buy a piece of the playing field from Wembley Stadium, London, UK. The area of grass is fondly remembered by all England fans as the spot where the ball landed for Geoff Hurst's controversial goal in the 1966 World Cup final.
Bates said: "When I came I didn't know it would be auctioned off. But it's a little bit of heritage and I wanted it in the right hands. "We're building a soccer museum next year and it will be deposited there."
