The most wins of the men's category in the World Coal Carrying Championships, held annually in Gawthorpe, West Yorkshire, UK, since 1964, is eight, shared by two competitors. Terry Lyons (UK) won in 1977–79 and 1981–85, and John Hunter (UK) won in 1990, 1998–2000, 2002–04 and 2006.
The World Coal Carrying Championships are held at Gawthorpe in the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, UK, on Easter Monday every year. Competitors are given a sack of coal – 50 kg (110 lb) for men and 20 kg (44lb) for women – and timed over the 1,013.38-m (1,108-yard; 0.63-mile) course through the streets, on the road within the pavements, between the Royal Oak Public House and the Maypole Green. Runs are only considered valid when the coal bag is dropped on to the haybales at the Maypole Green; if the bag is dropped at any other point in the race, the competitor may pick it up and continue, but may not receive any assistance in hoisting it back on to their shoulders.
Lyons' run of five wins from 1981 to 1985 might be also considered the record for most consecutive victories, although in more recent times, the reigning champion Andrew Corrigan can boast six wins since 2017, interrupted in 2020-21 by COVID-19 lockdowns.
The event is sponsored by Eric F Box, the local funeral director.
