The largest dragon lantern measured 277.2 m 909.4 ft long from head to tail, 4.3 m 14.1 ft high, and 2.51 m 8.23 ft wide along its body, and was 13.9 m 45.6 ft tall from the head to the ground. It was a Millennium Dragon Lantern presented on 31 Dec 1999 as part of the celebrations by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the Happy Valley Recreation Ground, Happy Valley, Hong Kong, China.

It weighed more than 20 tonnes and had more than 10,000 lights inside the body. Fluorescent tubes illuminated the outside of the dragon whilst 22 cooling machines inside prevented it from overheating. The frame was made of steel and then covered with silk which was emroidered with 20,000 silver panels. It took 200 craftsmen nine months to design, handbuild and then install it (the lantern was actually made in Foshan, China's mainland).
