At the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest on 13 May 2023, Sweden equalled Ireland’s long-standing record of seven wins when Loreen (b. Lorine Talhaoui) lifted the winner’s trophy for a second time with “Tattoo”.

The Scandinavian country had previously won the contest in 1974 (ABBA, with “Waterloo”), 1984 (Herreys, with “Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley”), 1991 (Carola, with “Fångad av en Stormvind”, aka “Captured by a Lovestorm”), 1999 (Charlotte Nilsson, with “Take Me to Your Heaven”), 2012 (Loreen, with “Euphoria”) and 2015 (Måns Zelmerlöw, with “Heroes”). Ireland’s seven wins came in 1970 (Dana, with “All Kinds of Everything”), 1980 (Johnny Logan, with “What’s Another Year”), 1987 (Johnny Logan, with “Hold Me Now”), 1992 (Linda Martin, with “Why Me?”), 1993 (Niamh Kavanagh, with “In Your Eyes”), 1994 (Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan, with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids”) and 1996 (Eimear Quinn, with “The Voice”).

Loreen and Johnny Logan are the only two performers to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice since its first edition in 1956. Additionally, Logan wrote Linda Martin’s 1992 winner for Ireland, “Why Me?”, which makes him the individual with the most wins overall at the Eurovision Song Contest – three.
