The first Oscar nomination for an acting performance in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is Angela Bassett (USA), who was shortlisted in the Best Supporting Actress category in the lead-up to the 95th Academy Awards for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (USA, 2022) on 24 January 2023.

Bassett, who had previously been shortlisted for her portrayal of the singer Tina Turner in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It? (USA, 1993), had already won a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award for the role of Queen Ramonda in 2023.

On the night of the Oscars, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 12 March 2023, Bassett lost out on the statuette to Jamie Lee Curtis for her role as Deidre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once (USA, 2022).

The original Black Panther (USA, 2018) was the first superhero movie nominated for the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards on 22 January 2019.
