This 1,101‑km (595-nautical-mi) yacht race began in 1925, and ran from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Plymouth, UK, via the Fastnet Rock off the coast of south-west Ireland. A six-strong crew led by Giovanni Soldini (Italy) completed this route in 23 hours 51 minutes 16 seconds in the trimaran Maserati Multi 70, from 7 to 8 May 2021. In August 2021, the end point was changed to Cherbourg, France, to accommodate the increasing number of boats taking part.

Just seven boats competed in the first Fastnet race in 1925. As of 2022, by which time the title of the competition had changed to the Rolex Fastnet Race, more than 500 vessels took part.
