Although fan mail is traditionally associated with film stars, no actor or actress has received in the course of a career the number of letters delivered to Charles Lindbergh (1902 - 1974) following his solo non-stop transatlantic flight in May 1927 - a total of 3,500,000. He took off in 'Spirit of St Louis' from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, USA on 20 May 1927 and landed on 21 May at Le Bourget, near Paris, France after flying 5,793km 3,600 miles in 33½ hours.
