The West Indies (2012 and 2016) and England (2010 and 2022) share this record with two ICC Men’s T20 World Cup wins apiece. India took the honours at the inaugural event, in South Africa in 2007, and Pakistan (2009), Sri Lanka (2014) and Australia (2021) have also lifted the trophy at the eight editions of the 20-over-per-side tournament held to date. No host nation has yet won the Men’s T20 World Cup. Co-hosts West Indies will try to break the curse in 2024.
England (138 for 5) took a share of the record by defeating Pakistan (137 for 8) by five wickets, with six balls remaining, in the final at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) in Australia on 13 November 2022. In a low-scoring encounter, it was Sam Curran’s economical 3 for 12 off four overs and Ben Stokes’ watchful 52 not out that saw England home. The victory made England double World Cup champions, after winning the 50-over tournament in 2019.
