On 27 February 2023, an announcement on Spotify’s Twitter account confirmed that The Weeknd (Canada, b. Abel Tesfaye) had become the first act with 100 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform. The R&B star, famous for hits such as “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears”, was comfortably ahead of Miley Cyrus (81.48 million), Taylor Swift (80.34 million), Rihanna (79.84 million) and Shakira (77.73 million).

The Top 5 acts have all boosted their listening figures in recent weeks: The Weeknd surged over the 100-million landmark with the remix of “Die for You”, featuring Ariana Grande, Cyrus with her streaming giant “Flowers”, Swift by the continued popularity of her Midnights album, Rihanna owing to her Super Bowl LVII half-time performance and Shakira after releasing her hard-hitting “diss track” “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53”.

The Weeknd’s listener hotspots were London, UK (2.413 million monthly listeners), Mexico City, Mexico (2.019 million), Los Angeles, USA (1.562 million), Jakarta, Indonesia (1.259 million) and São Paulo, Brazil (1.252 million) as of 1 March 2023.
