Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (USA, 2022) dominated the 29th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on 26 February 2023, winning almost every one of the event’s film awards all at once. The multiverse fantasy adventure picked up four "Outstanding Performance" gongs on the night: Female Actor in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Quan Wang); Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang); Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Jamie Lee Curtis as Deirdre Beaubeirdre); and Cast in a Motion Picture (Curtis, James Hong, Stephanie Hsu, Quan, Harry Shum Jr, Jenny Slate and Yeoh). Streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube channel, the ceremony was staged at Fairmont Century Plaza in California, USA.
On 11 January 2023, Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin (UK/USA, 2022) had received a SAG Awards record five nominations apiece, but six weeks later it was the former taking all the plaudits.
The film’s fifth nomination, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, went to Stephanie Hsu for playing Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki. The category was won by Hsu’s co-star Jamie Lee Curtis.
Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan were the first Asian actors to win SAG awards in individual categories. “This is not just for me, this is for every girl who looks like me,” said Yeoh after winning her Leading Role award. “Thank you for giving me a seat at the table.”
Everything picked up an unrivalled 11 nominations ahead of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on 12 March 2023, including Best Picture and the same Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress nods as the SAG Awards.
