The largest island that was created as a direct result of human action is the Ile Rene-Lavasseur, in Manicouagan Reservoir, Quebec, Canada, which measures 2,020 km² (780 mile²) in size. The island is so large the whole of New York City could fit onto it 2.5 times, and formed when a river was dammed to flood a 210 million-year-old meteor crater into a reservoir. The central uplift of the meteor crater forms the island.
