The W54 fission bomb, deployed by the USA in Europe between 1961 and 1971, is the smallest confirmed nuclear weapon ever made. Its warhead weighed 23.13 kg (51 lb), had a yield of 0.1 kilotons and a maximum range of 4 km (2.49 miles). Possessing 0.67% of the destructive power of the Hiroshima blast, the weight of the bomb was 34.47 kg (76 lb). It was 76 cm (30 in) long and measured 27 cm (11 in) in diameter at its widest point. It was designed to be used by commando teams to destroy harbours or bridges, or else deployed as a battlefield weapon, shot from the purpose-built Davy Crockett bazooka, operated by a three-soldier team. In 1997, reports emerged from Russia stating that the Soviet military intelligence agency had developed numerous "suitcase bombs". It was alleged that the bombs measured 60 x 40 x 20 cm (24 x 16 x 8 in) and were to be used by intelligence agents in Western cities in the event of a superpower war. This information was never officially confirmed.
