The greatest tides occur in the Bay of Fundy, which divides the peninsula of Nova Scotia, Canada from the United States' north-easternmost state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Burntcoat Head in the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, has the greatest mean spring range, with 14.5 m (47 ft 6 in).
The tide floods and ebbs over 3.2 km (2 miles) of tidal flat from the lower water mark to the head of the harbour.
Each phase of the cycle takes about 5 hours and 40 minutes.
