The AFL season's record is 150 by Bob Pratt (South Melbourne) in 1934 and by Peter Hudson (Hawthorn) in 1971. Australian Football officially dates back to 1858 when H.C.A. Harrison and T.W. Wills decided to create a game that was entirely Australian.  At around the same time, Irish Garrison Troops were playing Gaelic football and English rugby was also being played in the area.  Both Harrison and Wills were cricketers and in the early days the game was played on cricket grounds which explains why the field the game is played on today is oval-shaped.  The oldest club in Australia is Melbourne Football Club dating back to 1858, the same year the first recorded match was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Church of England Grammar School.  It varied greatly from the game today: there were forty players on either side and the goalposts were 1mile 1.6km apart!
