The greatest number of Australian Football League Premierships is 16 by Carlton between 1906 and 1995, and Essendon between 1897 and 2000.
In 1877 the Victorian Football Association was founded, from which eight teams broke away in 1897 to form the Victorian Football League (VFL). Four more teams had been admitted by 1925, and in 1987 teams from Queensland and Western Australia joined the league to make it the Australian Football League (AFL). A team from South Australia, Adelaide, joined in 1991, Fremantle (Western Australia) in 1995, with Port Adelaide joining in 1997.
