Novak Djokovic (Serbia, b. 22 May 1987) was 36 years 181 days old upon claiming his record-setting seventh ATP Finals crown in singles at Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy, on 19 November 2023.
An ATP Finals winner in 2008, 2012–15 and 2022 before his latest triumph, Djokovic gained revenge for his Green Group defeat to Jannik Sinner on 14 November by seeing off the fourth-ranked Italian 6–3, 6–3 in his own back yard as the 24-time Grand Slam winner cemented his status as the No.1-ranked tennis player in the world. Ironically, it had been Sinner’s group-stage defeat of Holger Rune on 16 November that had extended Djokovic’s participation in the tournament and guaranteed his place in the semi-finals.
For a week’s work at the Pala Alpitour, Djokovic collected $2,201,000 (£1,765,942) for winning the title, plus $1,105,000 (£886,581) for defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, $780,000 (£625,822) for two wins in the round robin stage and a participation fee of $325,500 (£261,160) – totalling $4,411,500 (£3,539,505).
The man whose tournament wins record he overhauled in Turin in 2023, Roger Federer (Switzerland, b. 8 August 1981), had previously won the singles title on 27 November 2011, aged 30 years 111 days. Federer’s six ATP Finals wins were in 2003–04, 2006–07 and 2010–11.
By losing to Sinner in the group stage, Djokovic "missed out" on a top-level tennis tournament record pay day of $4,801,500 (£3,852,416), which would have exceeded the $4,740,300 (£3,987,635) he pocketed for his five-match whitewash at the 2022 tournament.
Djokovic finished his 2023 ATP Tour season with a match record of 55 wins and six defeats, and on the day following his title in Turin he began a record 400th week as the world’s No.1-ranked tennis player.
